Installing Gentoo on Acer Aspire 5670

I’ll be keeping a journal of my installation and usage experiences of Gentoo on my Acer Aspire 5670. I purchased the 5670 in early February, and mainly used it as a Windows gaming machine until now. ATI released on 4/12/06 a new version of their proprietary drivers that support the X1400 graphics chip in this laptop, so I am hopeful that my experiences of using this laptop’s full feature set is quite likely.

Read about the install process, configuration files, and my general experiences.

    I’m curious? I tried you xorg.conf file on my Ubuntu based system and noted that when running fgl_glxgears, I get video corruption at the top of the screen (about 1′ inch). I’ve tracked this down to the “VideoRam” option in your xorg.conf file. If I set the value to anything above 131072 (128Mb) causes this corruption. Do you find the same problem?

    $ fglrxinfo
    display: :0.0 screen: 0
    OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
    OpenGL renderer string: Generic
    OpenGL version string: 2.0.5755 (8.24.8)

    How are you able to boot the machine without SATA configured into your Kernel? Or maybe we are using 2 different model 5670’s. I have the 5670 with the 5672 motherboard and my harddrive is SATA.

    I did notice this distortion, but it usually quickly went away. However, I did not realize what was causing it.

    I set the VideoRam to 512MB as that is what the card supports via “HyperMemory”, which at this point I’m pretty convinced is simply “use shared system memory.” Looking at my logs, it is interesting that 128MB is reported as found. Does this mean that this card actually has 128MB with 512MB max “HyperMemory” … I don’t know.

    Anyways, 128MB is fine. Thanks for the info!
